About chiropractic careWhat is chiropractic care?
Chiropractic care is a drug-free hands on approach to treating disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, as well as the effects of these disorders on general health. It is a holistic method that deals with treating the cause of the problem rather than just the symptoms. What conditions does chiro treat? Chiropractic care is effective in treating problems including back pain, neck pain, headaches, and pain in the joints of the arms and legs, as well as treating repetitive strains and injuries. Is chiropractic safe? Chiropractic is widely recognised as one of the safest drug-free, non invasive therapies available for the treatment of nuero-musculoskeletal complaints. Furthermore, the techniques used are not only gentle, safe and effective but done with patient's comfort levels. Is chiropractic ongoing? After patients get the relief they want, many choose to continue with some type of regular care for the purposes of a 'tune up'. These visits usually involve joint mobilisation and or manipulation and stretching. Ongoing periodic treatment can help detect and resolve new problems before they become serious. At Cannonvale Chiropractic Clinic our job is to offer you the very best of care, and your job is to decide how much of it you want! Do I require a referral from a GP? A referral is usually not needed to see a Chiropractor. However, you may be eligible for an Enhanced Primary Care plan (EPC) which entitles you to up to five visits with your chiropractor where Medicare covers the costs. For more information on EPC's contact your GP. Do private health funds offer cover? Yes. Most private health funds offer cover for Chiropractic care. If you have private health insurance with extra's then depending on your plan, all or part of your chiropractic fees may be covered. How are chiropractors trained? Australian chiropractors are five year university trained, and are government registered and government regulated health professionals. In addition to their academic training, chiropractors in Australia also participate in extensive postgraduate clinical placements. |
What to expectWhat happens at the first visit?
The first session lasts approximately 40 minutes. We will begin our session by reviewing the patient's health concerns, their family's health history, and any previous care they may have had under a doctor or allied health professional. We will then do a physical examination which usually incorporates orthopedic and neurological tests in addition to the chiropractic exam. If it seems clinically indicated, we may need to take x-rays. Your first visit will usually include some treatment. Depending on your history and problems, chiropractic adjustments at this time may need to wait until x-rays are reviewed. What does a treatment involve? Treatment plans are tailored for the patient and vary depending on their age, condition and health goals. Emphasis is placed on using techniques that are evidence-based and known to produce good results. At Helou Chiropractic, the treatments usually entail joint mobilisation and chiropractic adjustments. What is an adjustment? A spinal adjustment is a gentle and precise placement of the vertebra into its correct position. Adjusting the vertebrae can remove irritation and help the nervous system return to its natural efficiency. As a result, chiropractic adjustments support the body's immune system and promote self-healing. How long does a treatment take? Initial consultations are about 40 minutes. standard consults are usually around 15 minutes and extended consults are 30 minutes. How many treatments will I need before I see results? The number and frequency of treatments will vary from patient to patient. Most people will come and see us for relief or corrective care for acute or chronic conditions. Most patients see some progress within a week or two. As supporting muscles and ligaments heal, visits become less frequent. More difficult, chronic conditions may require regular visits over several months. |
Chiropractic techniquesSpecialised manual adjustment techniques include Diversified, Sacro Occipital Technique and Activator.
Diversified technique The diversified technique is the most commonly used chiropractic treatment. It involves the manipulation or adjustment of the spinal column and/or extremities. It is called Diversified because it is a combination of the best techniques from other methods of manipulation. Diversified technique involves the use of a low amplitude thrust to adjust the spine and correct any joint dysfunction. It continues to be one of the most effective treatments for most people. Sacro Occipital Technique (SOT) SOT is a popular low force technique designed to help normalise the relationship between the pelvis and the nervous system. With SOT protocol we use wedge-shaped devices known as 'blocks' to help correct your spine and properly 'tune' your nervous system. By knowing exactly where to position these blocks, we use the weight of your body to make corrections, naturally. By using gravity and your own body to effect correction, new, healthier patterns of spinal function can result. |
